Last night I had the pleasure of vising, Byron Burger, the latest addition to the Newcastle food scene.
I’m so excited about all of the new leisure developments opening up in the city at the moment, so I was delighted to receive an invite to go along to the restaurant’s launch.
I visited with my husband as he has a particular love of food, especially burgers. We arrived at 8pm and were greeted by the restaurant’s front of house team, who invited us to try one of their carefully selected craft beers. Although I’m not a huge fan of beer, I wanted to fully experience the Byron Burger concept, so I decided to play it safe and go for a traditional beer. John opted for something a little stronger in taste.
Byron Burger in Newcastle has opened up on a former H&M site and the place is unrecognisable from my last visit. Spread across three floors, it’s extremely spacious and has been decorated to a very high standard.
The Grey Street restaurant is one of the largest and grandest in the Byron family, and Byron’s designers and craftspeople have spent months transforming the turn-of-the century building. Every Byron has a unique design, and in Newcastle, the bespoke interiors take their inspiration from the building’s carefully-preserved historical features, including art nouveau stained glass and the dramatic central staircase.
Byron Grey Street is also the first Byron to feature a full bar alongside the restaurant, where guests can enjoy draft beer, bourbons, cocktails and hard shakes, with or without a hamburger on the side.
After a quick drink we headed to our table to eat, which was located in a booth upstairs. I decided to steer clear of beer and opted for a glass of white wine, which arrived quickly. It was then time to decide what we were going to eat.
I don’t eat red meat and have found that many burger bars can often only offer meal suitable for me, however I certainly wasn’t disappointed. In addition to several vegetarian options (which I will be returning to sample), there was also a chicken burger on the menu which I decided to go with. John went for a traditional Byron Burger, which was made from 100% beef. We also ordered a bowl of courgette fries and skin-on chips, in addition to a bowl of olives to start.
The food shortly arrived and we were not disappointed. My chicken burger was delicious and John said his meal was also fantastic.
There was an extensive list of milkshakes and desserts, however we were both pretty full so decided against ordering anything else. We did see a few other diners’ desserts arrive however, and they did look very good.
Overall I would highly recommend Byron Burger to anyone looking for somewhere to eat in Newcastle. There was a great atmosphere, the staff were very attentive and the food was extremely good. We will definitely be returning!
A bit about Byron….
Founded by Tom Byng in 2007, Byron serve hamburgers the way they should be: made with British beef, ground fresh, cooked medium and served in a soft, squishy bun with minimum fuss. The short and simple menu includes all of the favourites – Classic, Cheese, Chilli, Smoky and the signature Byron – plus a regularly-changing special.
Customers can also enjoy their proper hamburgers paired with Byron’s carefully-chosen selection of craft beers in the atmospheric central restaurant, with its vintage furniture, glamourous lighting and sumptuous leather seating.
